I had originally planned to compose a jazz piece, which is why I arranged jazz-inspired chords based on Cadd9 and developed it to set a progression I could improvise on. However, at the time of composing, I mostly listened to The Carpenters and modern indie music as well. Hence, I scraped the initial idea and opted for a more minimalist approach by changing the strumming pattern from a choppy one to simpler up and down strokes. The chord progression itself is heavily influenced by “Close to You”, but I added more chord variations within a one bar phrase (e.g. Cadd9 - B7sus4 -B7). The chorus melody is also inspired by Dodie’s “You”, as shown by the descending sequences that also occur in her song’s chorus.

These ideas were then recorded into ProTools with a condenser mic, as I chose to use a nylon guitar for this piece. My first draft composition lost marks due to the bad quality of the recording, which resulted in another session to record it from scratch with the guidance from my supervisor. There was little to no background noises in the second recording and I was able to produce a clearer sound from the guitar. After recording the chord progression, lead melody, and background melodies respectively, I continued by recording the bass line for the piece. Finally, I changed what was at first the guitar playing the second melody to the sound of a glockenspiel with the keyboard.

Overall, I believe my second recording session was a large improvement from my first, due to my raised awareness towards the technical factors that would influence my piece’s entire sound. I would add more dynamics to this piece, given the more mezzo piano dynamic level that was maintained all throughout the duration of it.
