about

“Multiplayer” is my third music technology composition. Being the latest of the three, I consider it more complex compared to my previous ones that incorporated two instruments at most. The recording was done on Reason through various keyboard sounds, therefore making the overall sound still rather computerized and “unnatural”. However, I believe I did fairly well in terms of the composition of musical elements as was planned clearly, making editing straightforward and efficient.

As usual, I began with the main chord progression that was inspired by some Queen songs such as “Radio Ga Ga” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”. Once I wrote the melody based on that, I decided on the structure and instrumentation which were heavily influenced by various 80s “superhero” film soundtracks.

The title comes from the retro video game style this piece has at the beginning and the ending. The change between the introduction and the band section portray how a person playing a game may imagine that they are no longer simply enjoying the game, but they are becoming the character they control. “Multiplayer” implies that there is more than one player taking part, inviting more people into this concept. In relation to the theme “what connects us”, I believe our common desire to experience more than what we have in reality is a human trait that allows us to delve deep into each other’s mindsets. The way a person lives cannot summarize who they are as a person. Instead, we may have the right to say we truly know someone once we learn the things they wish to achieve, despite how out of reach it maybe. Hence, in my opinion, video games are an example of a method in which one could escape from reality, expressing what they want and who they want to be.
