about

For my first creation, I had opted for an arrangement as I was inspired by musicians who published various medleys. I found it interesting how some of them compiled a few seemingly unrelated songs and arranged them to the point they would go together smoothly.
I began by writing the main chord progression my mashup would follow, as doing so would limit the song choices only to those that fit with the chords. Before developing the piece, I chose three songs that would serve the main melodies: “Wind of Change” as the introduction and ending, “For the Damaged Coda” as the verse, and “Ode to Sleep” as the chorus. Once I had arranged them and built the structure of the piece, I identified which chords would support the melodies for development in order to transition from one song to another.

Once I had a structure specified, I began recording the piece into ProTools with a keyboard and a guitar. I began by recording the chords of the entire piece before moving into the lead melodies. Unsatisfied with only mashing up three songs, I began to arrange a wider array of songs as an interlude (“Welcome to the Black Parade”, “Afterlife”, “Always”, “I Could Have Danced All Night”, “On Melancholy Hill”, “Clair de Lune”) and layered more melodies underneath the lead ones (“Space Oddity” and “What I’ve Done”). I then began to replace some tracks with different instruments provided by the keyboard (e.g. harp, bells, etc.) and added a heavy amount of reverb to individual tracks.

I believe the biggest challenge was maintain the tone of the piece when adding more layers of various genres of music. I am not exactly proud of the heavy effects I added, although it created a dreamy sound overall.
