Prior to composing this piece, I came across pictures of my younger self with my parents. I was overcome with nostalgia as I remembered the endless laughter with them and how simple the meaning of ‘joy’ was to me in the past. 'Reminiscence' is a composition for solo piano that
represents my realization that our relationship and history together are what connects us in a family.
Initially, I wanted the piece to sound like a pendulum with a steady waltz-like rhythm in order to give it a simple and calming atmosphere. My biggest challenge was to maintain the waltz accompaniment found at the beginning of the piece until the end without sounding monotonous. Thus, I decided to use arpeggios and broken chords while maintaining the ¾ rhythm. Additionally, I improvised the main theme by playing the melodies differently (sometimes only playing single notes, other times adding full chords).
In order to create a different atmosphere, I decided to modulate from Eb major to F major as I restate the main theme. Another challenge
was to depict the bittersweet feeling I had when I contemplated my childhood days. I, therefore, decided to end the piece with a direct restatement of the opening theme in F major without the
perfect cadence in the end. It gave the piece a rounded form but also an unfinished impression.
After two recording sessions, I finally managed to obtain the final version of my composition. I realized that it was much more complicated composing for a solo instrument than a band because in order to convey my message, I can only rely on technique and knowledge of the
instrument itself. From this project, I gained insight into the modification of chords to establish a certain mood.
