This piece is inspired by a breakup story caused by misusing trust. The male character in this song trusted a strangers’ words over his girlfriend’s, making her feel upset and unappreciated as he chose to trust a girl he recently met over her. This song’s purpose is to remind the audience that we can’t expect too highly of someone as everyone’s a human and we all make mistakes. A quote that inspired this song is “A relationship without trust and honesty is like a car without gas. You can stay in it all you want, but it won’t go anywhere.”

This song to me, was very challenging to compose as I wanted to show the emotions of anger, disappointment, and rejection into its melody and lyrics. In the first verse, I drew attention to the 2 adverbs “honestly/faithfully” by including higher-pitched notes which stresses the rejection/disappointment towards the male. In the 4th line of the chorus, “by her side and not by mine”, there is an ascending melody-line which develops tension and anger. In the very last line, I changed the lyrics to “now I know why”, to ironically create sympathy towards the male as he admits his mistake.

I composed this song in 6 days and recorded it 2 weeks after as I had to decide the instrumentation and create counter melodies. In the end, I included the harp, violin, viola, and cello. I used condenser microphones for vocals and a keyboard to create the strings in Cakewalk Bandlab. After recording it, I tweaked several false pitches and stabilized all sounds. Throughout this process, I learnt to use auto-tune independently which was very challenging as it had to be very precise and I learnt that the melody contour is very effective in expressing emotions.
