about

Throughout the composition, I was mainly influenced by progressive rock pieces such as Metallica’s Sad but True and Avenged Sevenfold Piece This Means War. These pieces serve as the foundation for a lot creative breakthroughs within my piece. This is evident in the first riff after the minute-long intro where I use a This Means War inspired riff. The groove of the song is also inspired by progressive rock songs while the breakdown was created by pure accident and mixing around with sounds on the Reason program. In the end I based off the song on the intro that used melodic parts of the riff, the riff itself and the experimental breakdown I came up with.
In terms of technology, I used 2 different software’s namely Reason and Protools. I used Reason for the majority of the processing as I find it more appealing to use due to the many features it provides such as the vast assortment of instruments, easy manipulating to fix misplayed parts, and simple and efficient layering. I found that the effects and instruments in Reason seemed to be satisfactory and I simply stuck by it until I realized that Protools had even more effects that I can experiment with. This led to better mixing and making the track seem less midi.
Listening to the final product, I am not fully satisfied as my taste of music and direction has changed and a more minimalist approach would have been both more suspenseful and dramatic. There were too many ideas going around and I wasn’t too fond of the messy and “uncommitted” ideas thrown in to the piece. It would have been a better piece if I were to have committed to a single idea and explored that to make the piece seem more concise and meaningful.
