The Red in the White was inspired by the beauty of Indonesia.

Indonesia has become home to a diverse society, and it’s also famous for its stunning scenery. This is why I composed this piece; I wanted to express my amazement of God’s creations in my country.\

First, I used Reason to lay out the rough ideas of the piece. Afterwards, I moved on to notate the piece. I wanted to use Sibelius in order to notate digitally; however, it took me longer than I expected as I was not accustomed to the program, so I decided to write it manually instead.

The next step was the recording. I worked with with some other DP Music students settling with the instrumentation of harp, piano,guzheng, and percussion. I then used Pro Tools to mix the audio and add new sounds for effect.

I was inspired by the Indonesian folk songs Indonesia Pusaka and Manuk Dadali as well as the Kungfu Panda 3 soundtrack. Since this was my first time composing, it was a challenge for me to create my own melodies, so I borrowed some phrases from these songs. These melodies were then developed to allow the instruments to interact with
one another, unfolding the music towards the end.

The reason why I composed for harp, piano, guzheng, violin, and percussion is because I felt that it would be easier composing for more than one instruments as simple melodies can be harmonized into something more developed.

I honestly feel that this composition is good enough for the first try. The melodies are clear and it doesn’t sound too crowded. Through this process, I learned to compose simple melodies and utilize Pro Tools . Additionally, I also developed my performing skills as I learn to cooperate and lead an ensemble.
